ABOUT THE ARTISAN
Verve Culture partnered with Villa Real to bring this hot chocolate variety set to Mercy House Global.
In Zaachila, a village in the heart of Oaxaca, chocolate is more than a recipe. It is a legacy passed carefully from one set of hands to the next. Villa Real Chocolate began in 2008 when Mrs. Dora Villarreal revived her grandmother’s cherished hot chocolate recipe, transforming a family tradition into a source of hope and livelihood for her community. Today, her daughter Ana Velia Villarreal carries that legacy forward with a small but dedicated team.
Every batch of Villa Real chocolate is handcrafted using time-honored methods—stone milling the cacao into paste, hand-filling each mold, and packaging every piece with care. Their ingredients are sourced from local markets and regional producers, grounding each chocolate in the flavors of Oaxaca and the heritage of Mexico’s cacao traditions.
To prepare this order for The Grace Case, the team spent thrity-two hours in production, with four artisans crafting the chocolate and three more carefully packaging it. In busy seasons, as many as twelve hands join in the work, each one essential to the rhythm of the workshop.
“Made by hands that know the soul,” their motto says—and it’s true. Every movement carries memory: a mother’s teaching, a grandmother’s wisdom, a family’s devotion to their craft.
For Ana, chocolate is not a business; it is culture, nourishment, and story. She dreams of sharing natural, nutrient-rich chocolate with families everywhere, introducing children in the U.S. to the beauty of cacao as it has been prepared for generations. She hopes one day to teach her own children this art, ensuring that the Villarreal legacy continues.
In every sip of Villa Real hot chocolate is a taste of Oaxaca and the work of artisans who pour their history, passion, and pride into each piece. It is not just food; it is heritage kept alive, one handmade chocolate at a time.
