About

our mission

Mercy House Global empowers vulnerable families in Jesus’ name by creating opportunities that provide hope. We accomplish our mission through job creation, orphan prevention, and personal development with a specific focus on the Bible’s most vulnerable: orphans, widows, and refugees.

We’re Different

When others move on, we dig deep. We stay. We fight. We trust God for the impossible.

We have an indigenous team on the ground in Kenya managing the maternity homes and working with artisans.

Our Why

It would be easier as a ministry to simply redistribute funds to those in need. Instead, we choose the hard road of empowerment. We take the long path because we believe in creating opportunities that provide hope.

How It Began

In March of 2010, Kristen Welch, Mercy House founder, traveled to Kenya, Africa, with Compassion International, the world’s largest child sponsorship program, to blog about their relief efforts in the slums of Nairobi. She was especially burdened visiting Mathare Valley, one of Africa’s largest slums.

Just days after returning home, Kristen read a heartbreaking article on CNN about the large number of backstreet abortions by girls forced into prostitution to feed their families. This was the birth of Mercy Maternity House, now known as Mercy House Global.

While in Kenya, Kristen met Maureen, one of Compassion’s leadership graduates, a former sponsored child. The Mercy Maternity House was formed to support the work Maureen does. Maureen is the full-time Executive Director of Rehema House (word for “mercy” in Swahili) in Kenya.

You can read the entire journey in Kristen’s book: Rhinestone Jesus: Saying Yes to God When Sparkly Safe Faith is No Longer Enough.

But that was just the beginning. In 2013, Mercy House Global was burdened with the need to provide sustainable jobs to vulnerable women and families. Our subscription clubs were born out of this burden in August 2014. Over the years, our subscription clubs have provided hundreds of thousands of hours of dignified work for marginalized artisans.

Statement of Faith

We believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God and without mistakes as originally written. It is the complete revelation of His will for salvation and the only unfailing rule of faith and practice for the Christian life.

There is one God, Creator of all things, eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and these three are co-eternal and of equal dignity and power. Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

We believe Jesus was miraculously conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of a virgin and He lived a sinless life.

Salvation is found only through faith in His substitutionary death on the cross and His bodily resurrection. By man’s disobeying God, every person incurred spiritual death, which is separation from God, and physical death as a consequence. Therefore, all people are sinners by nature and practice.

The Lord Jesus Christ died for our sins and all who believe in Him are declared righteous because of His sacrificial death and are, therefore, in right relationship with God.

The present ministry of the Holy Spirit indwelling all believers enables and empowers the life and ministry of the believer.

Upon the glorious return of Jesus Christ there will be a bodily resurrection of everyone who has lived, the everlasting blessedness of those in right relationship with God, and the everlasting punishment of those who have rejected God’s forgiveness in His Son.
