ABOUT THE ARTISAN
Local Hope is an artisan group from Houston, Texas, comprised of vulnerable women, including refugees and survivors of human trafficking. The group receives support from Mercy House Global through skills training and employment opportunities. Local Hope aims to provide a supportive work environment where women can rebuild their lives and gain economic independence.
In addition to creating economic opportunities through job creation, MHG extends its support to the local refugee community through various programs. These initiatives include ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages) classes and empowerment luncheons. In addition to fostering fellowship, the events also provide skills training, empowering individuals to enhance their capabilities and integrate successfully into their new environment. MHG’s multifaceted approach goes beyond commerce, emphasizing community development and the holistic well-being of its members.
MEET THE ARTISAN: Megan
Megan joined Local Hope in July 2024 after a difficult season marked by health challenges, financial strain, and discouragement about the future. Finding steady work had been a struggle, and the weight of depression made it hard to hold onto hope.
Since joining Local Hope, Megan has discovered joy and confidence in creating, especially in making candles, bath soaks, and lip balms. She has also learned valuable new skills, from hands-on production techniques to using digital platforms that improve efficiency.
The supportive and empowering environment at Local Hope has transformed Megan’s outlook. With training, encouragement, and the freedom to grow, she has gained the confidence to succeed both at work and in life. Today, she not only manages a budget but also helps lead initiatives like the Local Hope intern program.
For Megan, this work has been more than a job. It has been a source of renewal, restoring her confidence and inspiring her to embrace the person she is becoming.
