ABOUT THE ARTISAN

Hands Producing Hope is a nonprofit social enterprise that exists to help disadvantaged women tear down barriers that keep them in isolation and poverty. In addition to fair trade work, they provide artisan skills training, mentoring, adult literacy education, maternal health education, a clothing closet, and more.

This order was made by local refugee artisans Layla and Khadija and provided approximately 100 hours of work!

Artisans stories & impact:

Layla and Khadija dedicated around 100 hours to carefully crafting these detailed earrings together! The women in our refugee program gather 1–2 days a week to work, build community, practice English, and develop new skills.

Khadija, a refugee from Afghanistan, and Layla, a refugee from Sudan, both found this work from Mercy House to be not only an incredible financial help but also an opportunity for additional workdays where they could come together, connect, and escape isolation. Though they come from different parts of the world, they share many similar experiences. They provide each other with deep empathy and comfort as they discuss fears for their families back home who are in danger or the pain of missing their parents.

This earring order not only provided them with significant income but also fostered deeper connections and renewed hope.
