MEET THE ARTISANS: Have Hope

In 2010, a group of women from the Kariobangi slum in Kenya began gathering for Bible study and chose the name Have Hope as a declaration of the hope they longed to experience. Through years of perseverance, friendship, and faithful work, these women have developed valuable skills and created opportunities to provide for their families and move toward greater financial independence.

The women of Have Hope diligently save money together and have established multiple small businesses. In 2022, with the support of Mercy House Global customers, they began training to become skilled basket weavers, opening new opportunities to sell their beautiful creations in Kenya and through fair trade markets around the world. Each handwoven basket reflects their determination, growing confidence, and the lasting impact of dignified work.

Local Hope is a Mercy House Global artisan program based in Houston, Texas, providing dignified employment and skills training for women who have overcome human trafficking. Through meaningful work creating handcrafted candles and bath products, these women earn income, develop valuable skills, and build confidence as they work toward greater independence and stability.

Beyond artisan employment, Mercy House Global also supports vulnerable women in the Houston community through programs that foster connection, education, and personal growth. English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes help refugees develop language skills, while Women's Empowerment Luncheons provide opportunities for fellowship, encouragement, and practical learning for both refugees and survivors of human trafficking. Together, these initiatives create welcoming spaces where women can build relationships, discover their strengths, and move toward brighter futures.
