MEET THE ARTISANS: ABKA Leather

ABKA Leather is owned and managed by women, with eighty percent of its employees being female. A portion of each ABKA Leather piece sold is set aside to sponsor young girls in the rural village of Dessie, Ethiopia, covering school fees, meals, and accommodations so they can focus on learning and simply being young.

ABKA extends that investment beyond the classroom by offering the girls internships at its workshop in Addis Ababa. There, they have the opportunity to learn practical skills alongside ABKA’s team that can help prepare them for future employment. Through education, mentorship, and meaningful work, ABKA Leather is helping women and girls move forward with greater opportunity and confidence.

In Moradabad, India, handicrafts provide livelihoods for a significant portion of the community, yet artisans have historically faced low wages, costly materials, and financial uncertainty. Traditional skills passed from one generation to the next can be difficult to sustain when artisans are unable to earn enough from their craft.

After witnessing these challenges, Samuel Masih founded Noah’s Ark International Exports in 1986 to create a more equitable path forward. For more than thirty years, Noah’s Ark has supported artisans and their families through fair wages, long-term business partnerships, and health and education initiatives while helping preserve India’s rich tradition of handcrafted goods.
