MEET THE ARTISAN: Ameena
In the small town of Sarai Tareen, Ameena’s life has been shaped by courage and perseverance. She lost her mother at five, and soon after, her father’s small business collapsed. Hardship arrived early, but Ameena refused to surrender to it.
Married at fifteen to an artisan, she learned the art of horn, bone, and jewelry work and began creating beautiful pieces of her own. Life brought deep sorrow when her eldest daughter passed away at twelve, yet Ameena drew strength from her family and her craft.
Everything changed when she finally found steady work with fair pay and dignity. It was a turning point that allowed her children to thrive. Her daughter now attends college, and her sons study in English-speaking schools, milestones made possible through Ameena’s determination to give them a brighter future.
Beyond her craft, Ameena teaches Arabic and Urdu to young girls in her community. She believes deeply in unity: “In our community, we all work together, no matter our religion. That’s what makes India special.”
