ABOUT THE ARTISAN

Local Hope focuses on supporting women in Houston, TX. who are coming out of a life of oppression and are in a vulnerable situation. We provide a safe place for women to re-enter the workforce and obtain the training and skills needed to meet future goals. Through our ministry partners, quarterly empowerment lunches and ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes, we identify women who would benefit from job and skills training. Women in our Artisan Training Program are paid a fair and livable wage for the products they make. The items are sold in the Mercy House Global Marketplace and MHG Clubs to help continue the cycle of empowerment.

Muna has been a part of our Local Hope Program since the beginning, she was one of our first candle makers, and she has grown to be an expert in all things candle making, as well as learning to assist in teaching candle classes, working retail pop-ups, and packing online orders!

Over the past year, she has been working and studying hard to prepare to take her citizenship test, and on June 5, she officially became a USA citizen! Over 108 nations were represented in the citizenship ceremony in Houston, TX. What an honor to be a part of this incredible milestone!

Muna's son, Ameer, is having a great time in third grade but, like most kids, can’t help but look forward to those school-free days. Muna and her family have been working incredibly hard to launch their food truck, and it’s finally open! More and more people are discovering and enjoying their delicious food.
