ABOUT THE ARTISAN
Hands Producing Hope is a nonprofit social enterprise that exists to help disadvantaged women tear down barriers that are keeping them in isolation and poverty. In addition to fair trade work, they provide artisan skills training, mentoring, adult literacy education, maternal health education, a clothing closet, and more.
This order was made entirely by Layla and it provided approximately 25 hours of work!
Layla’s Journey
Layla is the lead artisan in Hands Producing Hope's local refugee program. Over the past four years, she has grown in responsibility and leadership, helping to welcome newer women into the program. The women in this program meet 1–2 days a week to work, build community, practice English, and develop new skills.
Layla recently learned bracelet making and loved the opportunity to expand her skill set, mastering the art of beaded bracelets.
Supporting Citizenship for Her Son
Layla is a refugee from Sudan living in the U.S. with her husband and three young boys. The extra work from MHG has been incredibly helpful, as she is saving up to pay the fees for her oldest son's citizenship application. Although she has already passed her own citizenship exam, she has been unable to apply for her son’s due to the high costs involved. This additional work will significantly contribute to making that possible.
